Weaver’s network of business connections helps client secure mortgage days before closing

Steve Stallcup was first introduced to Weaver more than 10 years ago when he was a top executive at a large, international specialty financial firm that provides secured, non-recourse loans (also known as pawn loans).

“As a benefit, that company provided their officers with outside tax preparation services,” Stallcup explains. “Jeanne Smith (Weaver’s partner in charge of Tax and Strategic Business Services) prepared my personal taxes for nearly 10 years while I was with that company.”

Because of that existing relationship, Stallcup turned to Weaver for both personal and business tax services when he started his own company—The Stallcup Group (www.ThePawnShopBroker.com)—in January 2009. “After I started out on my own I asked Jeanne to pick up my business work as well because I’d had a long relationship with Weaver previously,” he says.

When Stallcup took steps to purchase a new home in the summer of 2010, he was stunned to receive word from his lender mere days before the closing that they required two years of audited financial statements from his new business.

“When I originally arranged the financing with this lender several weeks prior, they assured me that all the documentation was in order and they did not need anything else,” Stallcup says. Additionally, at that point Stallcup had only been in business for himself for around 18 months, which further complicated matters with that lender.

He immediately called Smith in hopes of securing documentation that would satisfy the lender’s requirements.

“Unfortunately, there simply wasn’t enough time for Weaver to do a complete review—we were literally down to the wire on getting this deal done or I was going to lose the house,” he recalls. “Instead, Jeanne suggested I consider changing lenders. She put me in touch with a mortgage broker who connected me to Washington Federal, the bank that ultimately handled my mortgage.”

In addition to appreciating the ability to leverage Smith’s and Weaver’s vast network of professional connections throughout Texas, Stallcup is impressed with the firm’s level of responsiveness, as well as with the quality of their work. “They have always produced the documentation that I need for my tax return and they do it very well,” he says. “They always turned my return around very quickly, kept information on file and didn’t need a whole lot of interaction with me to get it done, which I really appreciate.”

Further, because of his line of work, Stallcup often shares certain financial information prepared by Weaver with prospective business partners and clients. “When I show the Weaver documentation to people I’m doing business with, the first thing they say—because they see a lot of this type of paperwork—is ‘this is impressive.’ I’ve heard that several times from people who are in the know, and that makes me look good. They’ve done good work for me.”
