Weaver sets up effective dashboarding

Texas Cancer Care, recently renamed The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders, opened in 1994 as Oncology-Hematology Consultants, P.A., the merger of two well-established medical oncology practices which had served patients in Tarrant County for more than a decade. In 1995, it became Texas Cancer Care and has grown from a single clinic to become one of the premier oncology practices in North Texas, with five clinics in Fort Worth, Burleson, Cleburne, Weatherford, and Mineral Wells.

Together with its management company, Operations Pathway Systems, The Center employs about 100 people. Thanks to its rapid growth, The Center needed a full-service outside CPA firm, and in 2003, chose Weaver, largely because of the firm’s comprehensive approach to its clients.

Maxine Lawyer, tax and business consulting partner in the firm’s Dallas office, is the key liaison to The Center.

Says Carolyn Laughlin, The Center’s director of financial services, “We knew we could go to Weaver for day-to-day issues as well as the review at year-end. We are a complicated entity, and Weaver has done well at estimating revenue as well as helping us with new tax projections.“

Weaver also set up fund accounting for the Cancer Education and Research Foundation of Texas, a nonprofit entity housed in The Center. The foundation receives research grants from pharmaceutical firms and other sources. This requires special accounting and monthly reports. Weaver established the fund accounting routine.

Information for the Center is presented through the “dashboard report,” a software program that the Wall Street Journal says is “changing financial planning and oversight at many businesses.” The report shows information on a computer screen the way a car’s dashboard feeds the driver information, offering quick and easy access to a world of real-time data.

Ms. Laughlin praises the ease and efficiency of the dashboard report that Weaver created for The Center. It shows at a glance how The Center is performing compared with the previous year or month, or even compared with other oncology practices.

But whatever The Center for Cancer and Blood Disorders needs, Ms. Laughlin is confident Weaver will be there with good advice and counsel: “Weaver has remained flexible, and I feel we’ve had an excellent working relationship. Maxine is professional, very responsive when I have a question, and I couldn’t ask for anyone easier to work with.”
