Weaver assists in Foreign National Returns

As a German-owned company, R. STAHL occasionally sends German employees over to work at the American facility—typically for short periods of time. In the past year, however, one German foreign national has worked in the U.S. long enough to have a domestic tax obligation.

“We initially decided to handle the preparation of this individual’s U.S. tax return internally,” recalls Walker. “However, I found myself calling Mary Thomas at Weaver to pick her brain so often about this issue, we quickly determined that it made more sense to simply engage them to prepare the return instead.”

R. STAHL had already been using the firm’s corporate tax and audit services both domestically and through an affiliate firm for a Canadian subsidiary, Walker adds. “That made it even easier to hand the preparation of this individual’s return off to Weaver and let them handle it completely. We knew it would be done correctly and the individual wouldn’t have to worry about it.”

Plus, he notes, when considering the time involved for R. STAHL’s internal accounting staff to research the foreign national tax rules both here and in Germany, “it would have taken us weeks to get up to speed and we still couldn’t be completely confident that we had it right. We place a high level of trust in Weaver, and frankly, the cost—if you factor the real time value of money and time—was negligible.”

Walker and his employee were both so satisfied with the service they received from Weaver, the company intends to use Thomas and her team when the next foreign national arrives.

“If the same situation arises again I’m sure we would work with them again, although we would engage them a whole lot earlier now that we’re familiar with the process,” concludes Walker. “Weaver made it so easy, and we now understand that this is a process we prefer to outsource.”
